In a vehicle accident, Laura Lynch, who co-founded the country band when they made their debut as the Dixie Chicks more than 30 years ago, passed away. She was sixty-five.

According to the state’s Department of Public Safety and local station WFAA, the musician, who was the group’s former lead singer and upright bass player, died in a head-on collision on a highway near El Paso, Texas, on December 22. According to the organization, the collision is still being looked into.

A statement regarding Laura’s passing was released on December 23 by Emily Strayer, Martie Maguire, and Natalie Maines, current Chicks members.

“We are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Laura Lynch, a founding member of The Chicks,” the group posted on Instagram, along with a vintage clip of their first ensemble playing in the 1990s. “We hold a special place in our hearts for the time we spent playing music, laughing, and traveling together.”

The sisters Martie and Emily, Robin Lynn Macy, and Laura formed the Dixie Chicks in 1989 as a bluegrass group. “Dixie Chicken,” a song by Little Feat from 1973, served as the basis for their moniker.
